Eye emergencies: what to do first

  • Chemical splash (acid, lime, cleaning liquid, battery fluid): rinse the eye straight away with plenty of clean running water, keep rinsing, and get to a hospital immediately. Do not wait to find a special solution. [R13]
  • Something stuck in or cutting the eye (firecracker fragment, metal, glass, stick): do not rinse, rub or press the eye, and do not try to remove the object. Cover the eye gently with a clean paper cup or shield and go to the hospital immediately. [R13]
  • Dust or a small particle on the surface: do not rub. Blink, and rinse gently with clean water. If it still feels stuck or the eye hurts, see a doctor. [R13]
  • Sudden loss of vision, a curtain across your vision, a sudden shower of floaters or flashes, or a painful red eye with headache and vomiting: this needs same-day emergency eye care. [R10][R11]

Not sure where to start?

A complete eye examination is the right first step for most eye problems. It takes about two hours, including dilating drops, and checks your glasses power, eye pressure, the front of the eye and the retina.
